The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the welfare of Nigeria Police Force personnel through a comprehensive review of the salary structure, allowances, insurance, pension-related benefits, and other welfare packages.
This was the outcome of the meeting of the Ministerial/Stakeholders Committee on the Review of the Nigeria Police Force Salary Structure, Welfare Package, and Settlement of Outstanding Benefits held on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, in Abuja.
Chairman of the Committee and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Police Affairs, Dr. Anuma Ogbonnaya Nlia, said the initiative reflects the government’s determination to address longstanding welfare concerns affecting serving and retired police personnel while strengthening the operational effectiveness of the Force.
The Committee reviewed regular and non-regular allowances to ensure they reflect prevailing economic realities and the peculiar nature of policing. It also examined outstanding pension arrears, death benefits, Group Life Insurance liabilities, Group Personal Accident claims, and other welfare obligations.
Inadequate accommodation was identified as one of the major challenges confronting police personnel, with the Committee stressing the need for a more realistic housing support framework. Members also agreed on the need to harmonise existing allowances and eliminate duplication.
The Committee called for innovative and sustainable funding mechanisms to complement annual budgetary provisions. A technical team was directed to harmonise proposed allowances with existing regulations and prepare a revised schedule for consideration at the next meeting.
Dr. Nlia described the exercise as a strategic investment in the welfare and motivation of police personnel, expressing confidence that the recommendations would strengthen institutional efficiency and enhance the capacity of the Nigeria Police Force to deliver on its constitutional responsibilities.
