The executive bill on state police will be ready for President Bola Tinubu’s review by September 3, 2026, according to the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila.
Gbajabiamila disclosed this on Monday while speaking with State House correspondents after a meeting between President Tinubu, the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Inspector-General of Police, and the leadership of the National Assembly.
The bill, which has already passed both chambers of the National Assembly, is expected to address concerns about the establishment of state police, with the National Assembly passing different versions of the bill in June and July 2026. The Council of State also deliberated extensively on the proposed legislation last week.
The bill will now be transmitted to the President after the National Assembly’s harmonisation committee resolves the differences between the Senate and House versions, with a conference committee expected to work on the bill from next week. Once the bill becomes law, President Tinubu is expected to sign it, marking a significant step towards decentralising Nigeria’s policing system.
