A Nigerian man, Obinwa Obichukwu, has been sentenced to two years in prison in the United Kingdom after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman twice at London’s Euston Station following a trial at Inner London Crown Court. The 45-year-old, of Armstrong Close in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, was convicted of two counts of sexual assault after a jury rejected his claim that the encounter was consensual. In addition to the prison term, the court imposed a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and placed him on the UK sex offenders register for a decade.
The incident occurred on the evening of August 20, 2023, when the victim, a lone woman, was walking towards Euston station. Obichukwu approached her, asked about the music she was listening to, and put his arm around her shoulder, inviting her to his home. As she continued along Euston Road, he repeatedly grabbed her hand and declared his love for her. When she reached the station entrance, Obichukwu blocked her path and sexually assaulted her. The victim proceeded down the escalator towards the London Underground platforms, but he followed and assaulted her again near the ticket barriers. She managed to push him away and escape, leaving him at the station before reporting the incident to authorities.
British Transport Police officers tracked Obichukwu to his home, where he was arrested. Investigators used the victim’s detailed testimony, supported by CCTV footage, to secure charges from the Crown Prosecution Service. Detective Constable Daniel Burke described Obichukwu as a “sexual predator” who deliberately targeted a woman travelling alone. “He claimed his assault was consensual and took his case to trial, but fortunately the jury saw straight through his lies and he’s now behind bars where he belongs,” Burke said.
The case is the latest in a series of legal troubles for Nigerian nationals abroad, further damaging the country’s reputation internationally.
