President Bola Tinubu has signed the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act 2026 into law, making the National Identification Number (NIN) the central identity for accessing critical public and private sector services.

The law integrates identity systems across government agencies, strengthens cybersecurity and data protection, and introduces tougher penalties for identity theft, impersonation, and fraudulent registrations. It is aimed at creating a single, secure identity system under the principle of “One person. One identity. One number.”
