Southwest Governors Issue Communiqué After Regional Meeting

The Southwest Governors’ Forum has released a communiqué outlining key resolutions reached during its latest meeting, where leaders from the six states deliberated on security, economic cooperation and infrastructure development across the region.

The governors reiterated their commitment to strengthening the Amotekun Corps, noting that improved funding, training and inter-state collaboration are essential to tackling rising security threats. They emphasized that security agencies across the Southwest must enhance intelligence sharing and coordinate more effectively to curb criminal activities, including kidnapping and banditry.

On the economy, the Forum resolved to deepen regional integration by promoting intra-regional trade, encouraging investment in agriculture, and supporting technology-driven initiatives that can boost job creation. The governors also agreed to harmonize policies that will make the region more attractive to investors.

Infrastructure development featured prominently in the communiqué, with leaders pledging to work together on major road networks that connect their states, as well as power solutions aimed at improving electricity supply for households and businesses. They called on the Federal Government to accelerate ongoing projects in the region and ensure equitable allocation of resources.

The Forum also discussed education and health, resolving to standardize certain policies across the states and to jointly address issues affecting learning outcomes and healthcare delivery. The governors reaffirmed their commitment to improving public institutions and supporting reforms that benefit citizens.

The meeting ended with a collective pledge to continue working as a bloc to safeguard lives and property and to advance the socioeconomic development of the Southwest.
