The Federal Government has confirmed that diplomatic discussions are underway to ease recent tensions between Nigeria and the United States. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this during an interview on Sky News, where he emphasized that engagement through diplomatic channels is already yielding progress.
According to Idris, both countries have reopened avenues of communication to address issues that have strained relations in recent weeks. Although he did not disclose specific details of the points of contention, the minister suggested that misunderstandings about Nigeria’s internal security and political environment had contributed to the friction.
“Channels of communication have been opened. I can confirm that we are talking with them, and I think they are understanding the situation better,” he said.
Idris added that a significant portion of the concerns raised by the U.S. stemmed from incomplete or inaccurate assessments of Nigeria’s governance and socio-political complexities.
“We believe that most of the information is a result of a lack of a proper understanding of the diversity and complexity of the problem we have at hand,” he stated.
The minister maintained that the Federal Government remains committed to constructive engagement with international partners, including the United States, stressing that Nigeria values its longstanding bilateral relations rooted in economic cooperation, security collaboration, and diplomatic support.
He expressed optimism that continued dialogue will help both nations arrive at a more balanced and mutually beneficial understanding.
