Several people were shot on Sunday at a Mormon church in Grand Blanc, Michigan, located about 50 miles north of Detroit.

According to police, the attacker opened fire during a service at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Authorities confirmed that the shooter has been β€œneutralized” and that there is no further threat to the public.

Witnesses reported smoke rising from the church building, which was later confirmed to be on fire. Emergency services were deployed to the scene to assist victims and contain the blaze.

Officials have not yet disclosed the number of victims or their conditions.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer condemned the incident, describing it as β€œunacceptable violence in a place of worship.”

The shooting comes days after the passing of Russell M. Nelson, president of the worldwide Mormon church, who died at the age of 101.

As of press time, investigations into the motive and full details of the attack are ongoing.
