The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to constitute a team of experts to verify the health condition of detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, within the next eight days.

Justice James Omotosho, who issued the directive on Friday, mandated the NMA to set up a medical panel comprising between eight and ten doctors, including specialists such as a cardiologist and a neurologist. The Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital, Abuja, is also to be part of the panel.

The judge instructed the team to visit the medical facility of the Department of State Services (DSS), where Kanu is currently held, to determine whether it is adequately equipped to handle his medical needs. The panel is further permitted to use any hospital in Nigeria capable of carrying out the required examinations.

The court explained that the findings of the medical team will guide its decision on Kanu’s request to be transferred to the National Hospital, Abuja, for specialized treatment.

Justice Omotosho stressed the urgency of the matter, directing the NMA to submit its report within the stipulated period to enable the court make a ruling on Kanu’s application.
