Nigeria is facing a potential nationwide power disruption as the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) commenced a strike on Wednesday, protesting unresolved labour disputes with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
The union, which represents electricity workers across the country, said the strike was prompted by delayed salaries, poor working conditions, and stalled negotiations with TCN management. NUEE warned that the industrial action could significantly affect power transmission and distribution, potentially causing widespread blackouts.
“This strike is a last resort after months of unaddressed grievances,” a union spokesperson said. “If urgent dialogue does not take place, electricity supply across the nation will be severely disrupted.”
The Federal Government has appealed to the parties to resume talks, emphasizing the risk to residential, commercial, and critical infrastructure if the strike persists. Sources within the power sector confirmed that several regions could experience reduced electricity supply or total outages, especially urban centres heavily reliant on the national grid.
Electricity consumers have been advised to make alternative arrangements as the strike takes effect, while businesses, hospitals, and essential services brace for interruptions.
This marks the latest escalation in the ongoing tension between electricity workers and management, highlighting structural and operational challenges within Nigeria’s power sector.
