Yenagoa, Nigeria — Bayelsa State has taken a major step toward energy independence as gas turbines with a combined capacity of 60 megawatts procured by Governor Douye Diri have arrived in the state.
The turbines, once installed at the ongoing Bayelsa Independent Power Plant project, are expected to significantly improve electricity supply, with projections that most parts of the state will begin to enjoy uninterrupted 24-hour power.
Governor Diri has consistently emphasized energy reform as a key pillar of his administration, arguing that reliable electricity supply will not only ease domestic living conditions but also attract investments, stimulate industrial growth, and reduce overdependence on the fragile national grid.
Officials say installation works will commence immediately, with engineers on-site to ensure timely integration into the state’s power infrastructure. The project, according to government sources, is designed to complement national supply while boosting Bayelsa’s capacity to sustain economic growth.
The development has been hailed by observers as a milestone that could transform Bayelsa’s economy, especially in small-scale industries, education, and healthcare, which are often crippled by erratic power supply.
