The Six governors of the Southwest region on Wednesday inaugurated the Western Nigeria Multimodal Transport Committee, a body mandated to drive the development of modern railway and transport infrastructure across the region.

The inauguration brought together representatives of the six state governments, the leadership of the Southwest Development Commission (SWDC), transportation stakeholders, railway experts, and other sector leaders.

According to the organisers, the committee will serve as a coordinating platform for the advancement of multimodal transport systems, with special focus on expanding and modernising railway infrastructure to boost connectivity, commerce, and integration within the Southwest.

Officials at the event stressed that the initiative is expected to strengthen regional cooperation, ease movement of goods and people, and support economic growth by aligning transport development plans with the broader vision of the Southwest Development Agenda.

The committee is also expected to interface with federal authorities and private sector partners to mobilise investment and technical support for the projects.
