Oyo Distributes Five Million Treated Nets to Combat Malaria

In a major public health initiative, the Oyo State Government has commenced the distribution of five million insecticide-treated mosquito nets across the state as part of its strategic efforts to combat malaria.

The flag-off ceremony took place in Ibadan, with state health officials, development partners, and community leaders in attendance. Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, stated that the exercise aims to reduce the prevalence of malaria and improve the general well-being of residents, especially children and pregnant women who are most vulnerable.

Dr. Ajetunmobi emphasized that the distribution is being carried out in partnership with donor agencies, including the Federal Ministry of Health, the Global Fund, and the Malaria Consortium, with a focus on ensuring that the nets reach every household in both urban and rural areas.

“This campaign is not just about giving out nets — it’s about saving lives,” the Commissioner said. “We urge all residents to collect their nets and use them properly to protect themselves and their families from malaria.”

Health educators have also been deployed to sensitize residents on the correct usage and maintenance of the nets.

The initiative is expected to significantly reduce malaria transmission in the state and aligns with Nigeria’s national malaria control strategy aimed at achieving zero malaria deaths by 2030.
