The football community is in mourning as former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, has died at the age of 61.
According to reports, Rufai succumbed to a long illness on Thursday morning, July 3, 2025.
A top official of the Lagos State Government confirmed the news, although the family has yet to make an official announcement.
Rufai, affectionately known as “Dodo Mayana,” was a revered figure in Nigerian football, renowned for his exceptional goalkeeping skills.
Throughout his illustrious career, Rufai earned 65 caps for the Super Eagles, featuring in two World Cups and the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph. He also played for notable clubs like Stationery Stores and Go Ahead Eagles.
As news of his passing spreads, tributes are pouring in for the legendary goalkeeper.
“Sad day for football community,” many are saying, as they reflect on Rufai’s remarkable contributions to Nigerian football.
Rufai’s legacy will be remembered for generations to come, and his impact on the sport will never be forgotten.
