Lagos shuts down Oko-Oba Abattoir over unhygienic practices

The Lagos State government has announced the indefinite closure of the Oko Oba Abattoir market in Agege.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made the announcement on Thursday, citing unhygienic practices and violations of environmental laws.

During an inspection of the abattoir facility, Wahab stated, “We have announced the indefinite closure of Oko Oba Abattoir, Agege, over unhygienic practices and violating different environmental laws.”

In a video, he told workers at the abattoir, “The government sent me here, and I am giving you the message. I am going to close it down fully until things are done the right way.”

Wahab expressed concerns over the unsanitary conditions, saying, “People cannot be sleeping in animal pens. It is not going to work.

“They cannot slaughter animals and discharge waste into public systems.

“Let us try to do things right.”

This closure is part of the state’s effort to promote environmental sanity and enforce the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017.

In April, the state government shut down several markets in the Ketu and Mile 12 areas for similar environmental violations.

The government emphasized the need to restore discipline and accountability in public spaces, urging residents and traders to support ongoing efforts to create a cleaner and more responsible Lagos.
