Rivers Assembly moves to Impeach Governor Fubara, deputy over alleged gross misconduct

The Rivers State House of Assembly has initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, citing allegations of gross misconduct.

In a formal notice, the lawmakers accused the governor of “reckless and unconstitutional expenditure of public funds” contrary to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The notice, issued in compliance with Section 188 of the Constitution, states: “We, the undersigned members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, hereby forward to you a Notice of Gross Misconduct by the Governor of Rivers State in the performance of the functions of his office.”

The impeachment move is the latest development in the ongoing feud between Fubara and the lawmakers, who are loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike.

The assembly’s actions have been seen as a deliberate attempt to undermine Fubara’s authority.

Recently, Fubara was locked out of the assembly quarters in Port Harcourt while attempting to present the 2025 Appropriation Bill.

The lawmakers claimed they had not received his letter in time, sparking further tensions between the two sides.

The impeachment notice has been published in at least three national newspapers, as required by Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

The next steps in the impeachment process remain uncertain, but the development has significant implications for the governance of Rivers State.
