Afenifere pays tribute to Pa Ayo Adebanjo

A prominent sociocultural organization of the Yoruba people, Afenifere, North America branch, has expressed its profound sorrow over the passing of Pa Ayo Adebanjo.

Adebanjo, a revered elder statesman and dedicated advocate for justice and democracy in Nigeria died on Friday, February 14, 2025, at his home in Lekki, Lagos.

The organization released an official condolence statement, honoring the life and legacy of the late Pa Adebanjo, who was widely known for his unwavering commitment to the advancement of true federalism and the protection of Yoruba interests within a united Nigeria.

Pa Adebanjo, a prominent member of Afenifere, was a fearless voice for equity and good governance. His legacy as a defender of democracy and human rights will forever remain an inspiration for generations.

The group emphasized on his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic struggle, particularly during the annulment of the June 12, 1993 elections, stand as a testament to his lifelong dedication to justice and the fight against tyranny.

In the statement signed by the group Chairperson, Dr. Durojaiye Akindutire, extended his heartfelt condolences to Adebanjo’s family, the leadership of Afenifere, and the Yoruba nation at large.

Dr. Akindutire praised Pa Adebanjo’s courageous stand on national issues, which earned him the respect of many, across different generations.

“His wisdom, courage, and principled stand on national issues earned him the respect of many across generations. His voice was one of reason, his actions guided by integrity,” the statement read.

“May his soul rest in peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire future generations to be brave in the face of tyranny.”

“Pa Adebanjo was a key figure in the formation of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), a pro-democracy group that played an essential role in the struggle for the restoration of democracy in Nigeria during the years following the annulment of the June 12 elections.” The group mentioned.
