At least 17 pupils dead In Zamfara as fire guts Almajiri school

A devastating fire engulfed an Almajiri school in Kauran Namoda, Zamfara State, on Tuesday night, resulting in the loss of at least 17 young lives.

The incident occurred when a fire spread rapidly through the school premises, trapping several pupils.

“It was learnt that there were scenes of panic as the fire spread rapidly through the school premises, trapping several of the young pupils,” a source said.

Zagazola Makama confirmed the incident on his X handle, stating, “Eyewitnesses described the fire as devastating, noting that efforts to contain it were hampered by its intensity.”

Makama added that local authorities and emergency responders arrived at the scene to offer help, but by then, the fire had already resulted in significant casualties.

Several other pupils sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment at local hospitals.

When SaharaReporters contacted the Zamfara State Police spokesperson, ASP Yazid Abubakar, he said, “Let me confirm with the DPO, I will get back to you.”
