Nigerians goes outraged over APC influencer Kem Kem Hajia Rahma’s support for implementing Sharia law in the South West region.
The backlash stems from concerns that Sharia law would undermine the cultural identity and traditions of the Yoruba people, who are indigenous to the region.
Critics argue that Sharia law has had devastating consequences for non-Muslims in Northern Nigeria, citing cases of Christians being imprisoned and even stoned to death.
They also point out that the South West region has a distinct cultural heritage that is incompatible with Sharia law.
Hajia Rahma attempted to clarify her stance on Twitter, stating that Sharia law is not binding on non-Muslims and only applies to Muslims.
However, her comments have done little to quell the outrage, with many calling for her to be held accountable for her views.
The controversy has raised a wider conversation about the role of religion in Nigerian politics and the importance of respecting cultural diversity.
As one X user, Gbenga Sagan, pointed out, “You came to fame with secular life in the south west but now demanding what has brought backwardness to the north to be replicated to Yoruba land. You’re just shameless.”
Another user, CitizenOlu, emphasized that the Yoruba people will not stand idly by while their customs and traditions are disrespected.
“We all know what some people are trying to achieve… Sharia law courts are not happening in the South West… Yorubas will decide their own fate without interference from non-Yorubas whether they share religion or not.”
The incident highlights the complex and sensitive nature of religious and cultural identity in Nigeria, and the need for leaders to approach these issues with caution and respect.
