Manchester City’s midfield maestro Rodri has been crowned the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner, edging out favored contender Vinicius Junior of Real Madrid.
The Spanish international’s phenomenal performance in the 2023/24 season, which saw him lift the Euro 2024 trophy with Spain and secure a record fourth consecutive Premier League title with Manchester City, ultimately swayed the votes.
Rodri’s triumph marks a significant milestone in his illustrious career, as he becomes the first Spaniard to claim the coveted award since Luis Suarez in 1960. Additionally, he is the first Premier League player to receive the honor since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2008.
The 28-year-old midfielder’s consistency, vision, and control on the pitch have been instrumental in Manchester City’s dominance of English football. His impressive displays for Spain in the European Championship further solidified his case for the Ballon d’Or.
Rodri’s 2023/24 campaign was nothing short of exceptional. He played a pivotal role in Manchester City’s record-breaking Premier League title win, scoring crucial goals and providing assists throughout the season.
On the international stage, Rodri’s performances in the Euro 2024 tournament were outstanding. He scored twice and provided three assists, helping Spain lift the trophy. His injury in the final against Germany did not deter his teammates, who went on to secure a 2-1 victory.
“I am overwhelmed with emotion,” Rodri said in his acceptance speech.
