The Federal Capital Territory Administration has disclosed plans to unveil a Unified Standard Transportation System in the nation’s capital.
The FCTA Director of Road Traffic Services, Dr Abdulateef Bello, made the disclosure on Monday, during a stakeholders meeting.
Bello also disclosed that the recovery of taxi ranks within the capital city would soon commence, following quit notices earlier issued.
He revealed that standardisation of the transportation system in Abuja had become necessary considering the rapid rate at which the city was evolving, adding that no aspect of it should be ignored.
The director said Abuja could not be left without an organised transportation system that would meet the needs of all citizens, adding that the administration had perfected plans with consultants, to bring in buses that use Compressed Natural Gas to solve the problems of mass transit in Abuja.
He explained that the buses, when acquired, would be deployed along different routes to replace rickety vehicles and taxis “that have been constituting nuisances on Abuja roads.”
A stakeholder, Dr Abubakar Sadiq, who is the chairman, RTEIN Mass Transit, said the new policy by the administration was a welcome development, and asked that critical players in the transportation sector be given adequate consideration.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Self Employed Commercial Drivers Association, Okorie Victor, urged the FCTA to embark on aggressive sensitisation, to ensure that all stakeholders properly understand the evolving policies of the administration in the transportation sector.
