March 1, 2024 3 min read

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has inaugurated three gun trucks to enhance its capacity of combating insecurity in the territory.

The gun trucks were inaugurated on Thursday at the command headquarters in Abuja by FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

Wike was represented by FCTA Director of Security Services, Mr Adamu Gwary.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the command also inaugurated a special tactical squad to strengthen the protection of lives and property in the FCT.

The minister said that it was germane to provide security agencies the impetus to combat crimes in line with the FCTA resolve to make the territory safer for all.

“We have approved the acquisition of communication gadgets, motorcycles, and operational vehicles and these are part of our efforts to support security agencies for optimal performance.

“Seeing all security agencies fully represented into one indivisible single unit and ready to cooperate in providing security is worth celebrating.

“The security challenges nationwide mostly in the FCT has drastically improved as security agencies have worked together to minimise the activities of criminal elements,” he said.

Wike charged the newly established squad to work tirelessly and professionally to justify its establishment.

“To the squad, it is one thing to be given the opportunity to perform and another to show your dedication.

“The best gift to give the CG is to make judicious use of this, to contribute your quota to the security of the country and territory.

“And see your efforts transmitted to the security of the territory where residents will sleep peacefully,” the minister said.

The NSCDC Commandant-General, Ahmed Audi, charged the personnel not to use the gun trucks in harrasing, intimidating, and molesting civilians.

“You must respect fundamental human rights and it must only be used on those who have deprived good Nigerians from sleep.

“Give us results, do this in synergy with sister agencies.

“The Police is the main agency in charge of protection of internal security and we are ready to strengthen our efforts and work in synergy,” he said.

Audi urged citizens to give credible intelligence information to security agencies for proactive actions and measures.

The FCT Commandant, Olusola Odumosu, assured that the command would meet expectations of providing effective security in the territory.

“Beside our regular patrols, the tactical squad will be strategically positioned within the territory to ward off criminals.

“We are not stopping at this, a special training will soon commence for the retraining of officers and men of the Intelligence and Investigation Department,” he added.

Odumosu, however, said that the command was in need of more operational vehicles, communication gadgets, protective wears and other vital equipment to meet the increased expansion of its operation.

He said this would aid in the effective coverage of various suburbs in the six area councils of the territory.

Odumosu further requested for land to set up a training center for NSCDC personnel in the command.

“We are currently using a borrowed space, and we will appreciate if your excellency could allocate a befitting land for us to build FCT Command’s Training Center, where we can carry out our training and other manpower development programmes.

“We appeal to you for allocation of residential land for affordable mass housing scheme to cushion the cost of living of our personnel in the FCT,” the commandant added.

NAN reports that the Chairman, House Committee on Interior, Mr Ahmed Abdullahi, donated 10 motorbikes to strengthen the capacity of NSCDC personnel in the FCT.
