The Sarki Sasa of the Hausawa community in Oyo State, Haruna Maiyasin, has been suspended for alleged insubordination and disrespect for the Olubadan of Ibadanland.
He was also accused of unlawful conferment of chieftaincy titles on people without recourse to Sarki Hausawa of Ibadanland.
This decision was taken at the end of the Hausawa community meeting on Wednesday, headed by the Seriki Hausawa of Ibadanland, Alhaji Ali Zungeru, held at his Sabo palace in Ibadan North West Local Government Area of the state.
The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, had earlier warned that only the Sarkin Hausawa of Ibadanland had the recognition of his authority as the head of the Hausa community in the entire ancient metropolis.
Also recall that Oba Balogun had said that the clarification became imperative given the petition dated October 18, 2023, by the current Sarkin Hausawa of Ibadanland, Zungeru, alleging threat, breach of peace and unrest in the metropolis through the activities of Maiyasin who goes by the title Sarkin Sasa.
Zungeru, in his speech after the meeting, however, noted that the continued stay of Maiyasin as District Head is capable of igniting crisis in the area.
He said: “It was during the reign of my elder brother, Shuaibu Dikko III, in 1983 that Maiyasin was appointed as a District Head, otherwise known as Baale in Yorubaland for administrative convenience with the hope to maintain peace, sanity and justice among the Hausa community in Sasa area.
“There has never been a time in history that a local, state or even Federal Government appoints another person as head of the Arewa community aside from Seriki Hausawa of Ibadanland.
“However, it is sad to note that Maianguwa of Sasa is now taking steps capable of truncating the existing peace that the state is enjoying with the unlawful installation of some people as chiefs without recourse to Seriki Hausawa of Ibadanland.
“Also an alleged plan to remove Seriki Hausawa in Akinyele, Ado Sule and the Chairman of the Trailer, Yaro Abubakar, who were installed by Zungeru is capable of causing mayhem in the area, if not addressed by the relevant authorities. It is of note that Maiyasin is an appointee of Zungeru and as a result, cannot remove another appointee from office.
“It is in line with this, and, to avoid anything that can lead to intra and inter-communal clash as we did experience before in Sabo-Sagamu, Sabo-Ile-Ife and recently in Sasa community in Akinyele Local Government that, I, Zungeru, the Sarkin Hausawa of Ibadanland and all the members of Arewa traditional institutions have decided to suspend the appointment of Maiyasin as the District Head of Hausa community in Sasa area, over insubordination, disrespect for the referred stool of Olubadan of Ibadanland and unlawful conferment of Chieftaincy titles on the people without recourse to Sarki Hausawa of Ibadanland.
“The suspension order shall stand pending the decision of the entire Arewa Community Council in Ibadan.”
