The Public Relations Officer of Delta State Police Command, SP. Bright Edafe, reassured the public that there are designated correctional centres for underage offenders in Nigeria.
Addressing the issue via his social media platform on Wednesday, Edafe emphasized the necessity of such facilities, stating, “People question why the police would apprehend a girl or boy as young as 12 years old.
“However, it’s important for Deltans and concerned Nigerians to understand that we have correctional centres specifically tailored for underage offenders across the country.”
Highlighting the importance of awareness, Edafe further revealed, “In Delta State, such a centre is located in Sapele.
“Knowledge is indeed power, and ignorance of the law cannot serve as an excuse.”
This statement followed a previous incident reported in October 2023, where the Ogun State Police Command arrested two minors, aged six and nine years old, for their alleged involvement in setting fire on their school in Isheri-Olofin.
In the light of recent events, the confirmation of these correctional centres underscores the commitment of law enforcement authorities to address juvenile delinquency while ensuring appropriate rehabilitation and support for young offenders.
Additionally, in a separate incident, popular Nollywood actor, Junior Pope, narrowly escaped death and currently undergoing treatment in a hospital after being revived.
