Tinubu Commends Liberian President Weah for Conceding Defeat in Presidential Election

November 18, 2023 2 min read

Nigerian President, Bola Tinubu, has commended the Liberian President, George Weah, for conceding defeat in the Liberian presidential election. With ballots remaining less than 1%, the opposition candidate Joseph Boakai has won the election by scoring 50.89% of the total 100%. The incumbent President George Weah settled for 48.11 percent of the votes.

There have been reactions from across the world as another incumbent president in Africa conceded defeat.

It’s very rare in the black continent for opposition to beat the ruling party.

An ex-Nigerian president, Goodluck Jonathan had also commended a former ballon d’or winner Weah for accepting the results of the election in good faith.

Bola Tinubu sent his message through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngalele on Saturday.

β€œThe Liberian people have spoken, and we have heard their voice,” Weah had said in an address to the nation, adding that Boakai β€œis in a lead that we cannot surpass.”

β€œI commend President George Weah for his sterling example, undiluted patriotism, and statesmanship.

“He has defied the stereotype that peaceful transitions of power are untenable in West Africa”, he said.

β€œHe has demonstrated that the outcome of elections in the sub-region need not become the propellant of violence and unrest and that the will of the people must always be respected,” President Bola Tinubu said.
