The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abass, has declared the Surulere 1 Federal Constituency Seat vacant following the official resignation of the erstwhile lawmaker and former Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila.

Abass on Wednesday read Gbajabiamila’s resignation letter which was presented on the floor of the house.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would need to conduct a fresh election to fill the vacant seat.

President Tinubu had earlier announced the appointment of the Gbajabiamila as his Chief of Staff, and Sen. Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, a former Deputy Governor of Jigawa State, as his Deputy Chief of Staff.

Accepting his appointment on his Twitter handle, the House Speaker had noted that his appointment would end his 20 years in the National Assembly as he had spent four six terms in the legislature. He had said, “Thank you Mr. President @officialABAT for finding me worthy of being your Chief of Staff.“

Having spent the last 20 years in the Nigerian Parliament, and after winning my 6th term election into the National Assembly, I shall work with Mr President in discharging the enormous task ahead of him for the peace and progress of the federal republic of Nigeria.

“I shall give my best when I take office on June 14, 2023, as reflected in Mr. President’s official letter.”
