President Zelenskiy Calls for Faster Fortifications in Key Sectors in Ukraine

December 2, 2023 1 min read

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has called for faster fortifications in key sectors under attack by Russian forces, particularly in Eastern Ukraine, the focal point of Moscowโ€™s advances 21 months into its invasion.

Zelenskiy made his appeal after touring Ukrainian positions in the North-East, one of several areas where Russian forces have been attempting to make recent inroads and recapture areas retaken by Ukrainian troops a year ago.

He stated that one of his meetings with Commanders was about fortifications.

โ€œThere should be a boost and an acceleration in the construction of structures in all major sectors where reinforcement is needed,โ€ Zelenskiy stated in his nightly video address.

Naturally, this means that the Donetsk regionโ€™s Avdiivka, Maryinka, and other sectors will receive the most attention.

Since mid-October, Russian forces have focused their attention on the devastated town of Avdiivka, known for its vast coking plant and its location as a gateway to the Russian-held regional center of Donetsk, 20 kilometers (12 miles) to the east.

Military spokesman Oleksandr Shtupun said Ukrainian forces had repelled Russian attacks on the coking plant.
