Ogun Chief Judge Grants Amnesty to 7 Inmates

July 18, 2023 2 min read

In an effort to decongest correctional centres across Ogun State, the Chief Judge, Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu, has granted amnesty to seven inmates.

Announcing the amnesty, during a jail delivery exercise held at the conference hall of the State Judiciary Complex in Abeokuta, Justice Dipeolu stated that the details of the released inmates, including their names, fingerprints, and pictures, were thoroughly documented for record purposes, in case any of the freed committed another crime in future.

She advised the beneficiaries of the amnesty to refrain from committing any more offenses, as they might not be as lucky if they find themselves back in custody in the future.

The Chief Judge explained that the files of the released inmates had been sorted from the Public Prosecution’s Department of the Ministry of Justice, various correctional centres, and courts in the state, praising the efforts of the sub-committee on decongestion of correctional centres for making the process of the jail delivery exercise, which was conducted quarterly smoother.

In his remark, officer in charge of old Custodian Centre, Mr. James Ogunmoyede, commended the state government for its support in ensuring prompt justice dispensation, charging heads of Correctional Centres to ensure prompt notification of the CJ of any occurrence.

Contributing, the representative of a Non-governmental Organisation, Friend of Joseph Foundation, Mr.Taiwo Olukoyede, expressed gratitude to the Chief Judge for the successful execution of the amnesty, highlighting the role of the centre in presenting cases of inmates without proper documentation and urged the judiciary to address the challenges faced by others in similar situations.
