The Nigerian Government has begun paying the new minimum wage to Federal Government employees, starting today, September 26, 2024.

Bawa Mokwa, spokesperson for the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, confirmed this development to journalists, stating that employees can expect notifications regarding their updated salary payments.

This update follows the approval of the new National Minimum Wage Act, which raises the minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000.

According to Mokwa “Federal Government civil servants will start getting the new minimum wage from today(Thursday) this September 2024.

”What I can tell you is that the minimum wage salary payment is today I am not sure of the arrears,”

The Act, signed into law on July 29, 2024, also reduces the review period for the minimum wage from five to three years.

While Mokwa didn’t clarify whether the minimum wage would be disbursed with outstanding arrears, President Bola Tinubu has assured workers that they will be another review of the wage every 3-years.
