Syrian president, Bashar Assad, who fled the country Saturday has arrived in Moscow and have been granted asylum by the Russian government, according to Russian News Agency Tass.

Bashar al-Assad’s, fate remains unclear.

Rebels had closed in on Damascus, the capital city, prompting speculation about Assad’s possible destinations.

Allies such as Iran and Russia were initially considered likely options, but there has been no confirmation of Assad’s arrival in either country.

The Russian News Agency Tass reported that Assad had arrived in Moscow and been granted asylum, but this information remains unverified.

The situation unfolded after a coalition of radical Islamist groups launched a sweeping offensive across Syria, capturing the capital city and leading to the fall of Assad’s regime.

This regime had seen the Assad family rule Syria for over 50 years.

Syria has been ravaged by a bloody civil war for almost 14 years, resulting in the rise of the Islamic State terrorist organization and years-long interventions by countries such as the United States, Russia, Iran, and Turkey.
