The Igbo Women Assembly (IWA) has strongly condemned the Lagos government’s decision to teach only Yoruba language in state-owned schools, threatening to take legal action.

IWA’s national president, Nneka Chimezie, expressed concerns that this legislation is improper, given Lagos’ cosmopolitan nature, where many tribes coexist.

According to Chimezie, the government should adopt a more inclusive approach, teaching multiple languages, including Igbo, Hausa, and Yoruba.

She praised the Yoruba people for preserving their language and encouraged Igbo sons and daughters to join the campaign to prevent the Igbo language from becoming extinct.

To promote the Igbo language, IWA will host an event on February 21, coinciding with the United Nations’ Mother Tongue Day. The event, held in Umuahia, will bring together prominent Igbo individuals to discuss strategies for preserving their language.

Chimezie also called on Governor Charles Soludo to address the activities of Agunechemba, a vigilance group, and put an end to extra-judicial killings in Anambra.

She emphasized that suspects should be handed over to the police for proper investigation and prosecution, rather than being killed.
