FG warns states as River Niger water level rises

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency issued a warning to the public about increasing water levels in the River Niger as of August 22, 2024.

This warning follows a report from the Niger Basin Authority in Niamey, Niger Republic, which indicates that upstream activities in Niger and Mali are affecting the situation.

In a statement released on Friday and signed by NIHSA’s Director General, Umar Mohammed, it was mentioned, “Flood waters from these two countries are expected to gradually flow into Nigeria through Kebbi State.”

The statement also noted that the operators of the Kainji and Jebba dams on the River Niger have been alerted and are well-prepared to handle the situation.

Mohammed stressed that, as of August 22, 2024, the dams have not released any water from their reservoirs.

NIHSA has advised states and communities along the River Niger to remain vigilant, as peak floodwaters are expected towards the end of August and into September.

The agency assured that it will keep monitoring the flood situation and provide regular updates to the public.
