Extortion In The Name of Culture: Ijebu Ode community speaks out against 40million Regberegbe Age Group membership fee

A disturbing trend has emerged in Ijebu-Ode, where a gang claiming to represent the Regberegbe Age Group Society has been demanding a whopping sum of N40 million from sons and daughters of the soil before being recognized as members.

This extortionate practice has raised concerns among community elders and leaders, who are being urged to intervene and call the group to order.

According to Otunba Ladipo Olusanya Adeokun, a social media user who reported the issue online said, “such extortionate practices have no place in our community, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that our cultural heritage is not exploited for personal gain.”

The Regberegbe Age Group Society is a well-known institution in Ijebu-Ode, with a rich cultural heritage

However, the current demands being made by the group are causing concern among community members, who are calling for immediate action to address the issue and restore the integrity of the age group societies.

Adeokun said, β€œI am bringing to the attention of community elders and leaders a disturbing issue in ljebu-Ode.

β€œA gang claiming to represent the Regberegbe age group society has been demanding that sons and daughters of the soil pay a whopping sum of +40 million into their account before being recognized as members.

β€œI strongly believe that community elders and leaders should intervene and call this group to order. Such extortionate practices have no place in our community, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that our cultural heritage is not exploited for personal gain.

Adeokun emphasized, “I strongly believe that community elders and leaders should intervene and call this group to order. We must ensure that our cultural heritage is not exploited for personal gain.
