BREAKING: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer Resigns After Mounting Pressure from Labour Party
Keir Starmer has resigned as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and leader of the Labour Party, announcing his decision in a statement outside 10 Downing Street on Monday morning .
The resignation follows weeks of mounting pressure from within his own party, triggered by the victory of his rival Andy Burnham in a special election for a seat in Parliament last Thursday . Burnham, the former mayor of Greater Manchester, ran specifically to challenge Starmer for leadership .
In his resignation statement, Starmer said every decision he made in office was about “putting the country I love first” . He spoke to the King earlier on Monday to inform him of his decision .
He will remain as caretaker prime minister until a new Labour leader is chosen in the coming weeks. The party’s National Executive Committee will open nominations for the leadership on July 9, with the process expected to be completed by the summer recess .
Andy Burnham, who is due to be sworn in as MP for Makerfield on Monday afternoon, is now the overwhelming favourite to become the UK’s next prime minister . He is expected to use the Labour Party conference in late September as a springboard for his leadership .
Starmer’s resignation means Britain will have its seventh prime minister in just over a decade .
Starmer, who led Labour to a landslide victory in July 2024, struggled to deliver promised economic growth, repair public services, and ease the cost of living . His popularity declined amid policy flip-flops and political scandals, including the controversial appointment of Peter Mandelson as UK ambassador to the US .
More than 100 Labour MPs had publicly called for him to step aside . Even senior cabinet ministers, including the foreign secretary and home secretary, privately urged him to set a timetable for his departure .
US President Donald Trump weighed in on the resignation, posting on social media: “Keir Starmer will resign as Prime Minister of The United Kingdom. He failed badly on two very important subjects – IMMIGRATION AND ENERGY (OPEN NORTH SEA OIL!). I wish him well!” .
