The Catholic Church has a new leader. After a conclave of cardinals in the Sistine Chapel, America-born Cardinal Robert Prevost has been elected as the 267th Pope, succeeding Pope Francis.

Following the traditional announcement of “Habemus papam!” (Latin for “We have a pope!”) from the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica, Cardinal Prevost’s election was confirmed.

He will be known as Pope Leo XIV, guiding Catholics worldwide. The news was signaled by white smoke rising from the Sistine Chapel on Thursday.
