Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has denied reports of an impending impeachment plot against him, describing the claims as “fake news”.
Akpabio addressed the issue on the Senate floor, stating that reports of the Department of State Services (DSS) taking over the National Assembly premises to prevent his removal were entirely false.
The Senate President joked about referring the matter to a committee, saying, “Which committee do we refer this to?
“They said DSS has surrounded the national assembly to possibly stop the impeachment of principal officers. There is no limit to social media… we are sitting down here doing our work peacefully, oblivious of the mischief.” Akpabio said
Akpabio attributed the spread of misinformation to the pursuit of website traffic and revenue.
The Senate President has referred the matter to the Committee on Special Duties for investigation, with a report expected to be presented to the Committee of the Whole as soon as possible.
This development comes amidst ongoing speculation about Akpabio’s leadership and rumors of discontent among some senators.
However, Akpabio’s denial aims to quell the rumors and reassure the public of the National Assembly’s stability.
