A Police Inspector, Gbenga Fajuyi, has been sentenced to 22 years imprisonment for impregnating his own daughter.

Fajuyi, who was stationed at the Niger State Command, was found guilty of forcefully engaging in sexual intercourse with his daughter while she was in secondary school in 2019.

The incident took place in Fajuyi’s room in the Ungwan Nasarawa area of Tafa LGA.

The daughter was an SS1 student at Government Day Secondary School Sabon-Wuse

Inspector Fajuyi, was said to have put his daughter in a family way and the girl had delivered a baby girl.

“The Police Inspector had warned her that if she told anybody, he would kill her,” Police report revealed.

During the investigation carried out by the police, it was discovered that Fajuyi did not only impregnate his daughter, but also committed the heinous act of strangling and killing the baby just a few days after the delivery.

Fajuyi, it was gathered, confessed to commission of the crimes in the course of the investigation.

“After delivery, you took the newborn baby to a nearby river and strangled the baby to death”, the police prosecutor, Inspector Lawrence Owette, told the court, noting that the three-count charge contravened Section 18 (2) of the Niger State Child Right Law 2010, Section 390 25 (3), and 397 B of the penal code.

When the charges were presented to him by the Presiding Senior Magistrate, Christy Barau, the accused, Fajuyi, pleaded guilty to the charges.

However, despite his plea, the court emphasized the gravity of the offense and requested the police prosecutor to provide evidence and bring forth witnesses.

According to reports, the prosecutor summoned the investigating police officer, as well as the girl’s mother and the girl herself, who testified that the father had been sexually abusing her since she was 12 years old, resulting in her pregnancy at the age of 13.

Delivering the judgment, Senior Magistrate, Christy Barau, the presiding officer of the court, condemned the convict as a monstrous individual who, as a law enforcement officer entrusted with protecting the young girl, instead subjected her to such horrifying acts, forcing her into adulthood prematurely.

Consequently, the court sentenced Fajuyi to 22 years imprisonment at the Minna Correctional Centre, with no option of fine, and the sentence would be served concurrently.
