Motorists in Ogun State were taken aback on Tuesday as petrol dealers raised the pump price from N500 to between N580 and N700 per litre.
This increase by independent and major marketers followed the adjustment of the pump price by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) from N515 to N617.
Some filling stations in Abeokuta, the state capital, dispensed fuel at N700 per litre, while others charged N580 per litre.
The sudden increase led to a significant rise in inter and intra-state transport fares.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly opposed the increased pump price, stating that it was unacceptable to Nigerians.
The NLC believed that this hike posed. a threat to the socio-economic well-being of the citizens, their businesses, incomes, and livelihoods.
The labor center called on the federal government to reconsider its decision and avoid the possibility of fuel prices reaching N1,000 per liter.
The NLC expressed skepticism about how this development benefited the people or the economy.
He said, “This increment is unacceptable to us at the congress because it poses a significant threat to the socio-economic well-being of the citizenry, their businesses, incomes, livelihood, everything!
“We had said earlier that no reasonable government acting reasonably, leaves its national currency entirely to the storms of the Market as this could lead to unintended consequences.”
