The Sokoto State Hisbah Board has banned the long-standing marriage practice that requires prospective grooms to present soft drinks, sachet water, biscuits, sweets, and kola nuts to the bride’s family.
The Commander of the Hisbah Board, Usman Abdullahi Jatau, announced the directive on Monday, stating that the practice has become a financial burden on families and is contrary to Islamic teachings. The ban also prohibits the use of DJs and Wazigidi music during wedding ceremonies as part of efforts to regulate marriage practices in the state.
The decision has sparked debate, with some residents supporting the move as a necessary step to reduce wedding costs and uphold religious values, while others have criticised it as an overreach of government authority.
According to Jatau, the Hisbah Board will begin enforcing the ban immediately, with violators facing sanctions. The move is part of a broader effort by the Sokoto State Government to regulate social practices and ensure compliance with Islamic principles.
