Nigeria has recorded a major breakthrough on the international academic stage as students from Ekiti and Kwara States played leading roles in securing a Gold Award for Team Nigeria in the Middle School Group category at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup held in Shanghai, China.
Oluwadamilola Adeolu, Abdurrahman Yusuf and Maryam Yusuf were instrumental in the victory, which marks Nigeria’s debut participation in the global championship. The team qualified after delivering strong performances at the Nigeria Spelling Bee and the African Spelling Bee Championship.
The success highlights the depth of academic talent and competitive spirit among students from Yoruba states. Observers have pointed to this achievement as another example of Yoruba excellence in education, where rigorous preparation and dedication continue to produce outstanding results on the world stage.
Education stakeholders believe the win will further motivate investment in literacy programmes and academic competitions, particularly in Ekiti and Kwara, which have a track record of nurturing high-achieving scholars. The victory is expected to inspire a new generation of students across Yorubaland and Nigeria to pursue excellence in their studies.
