JUST IN: Kwara Christian Leaders Urge Tinubu to Consider Christian Candidate for APC Governorship Ticket in 2027

June 29, 2026 2 min read

The Conglomerate of Kwara State Christian Communities has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to support the emergence of a Christian governorship candidate on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 election .

In an open letter dated June 27, 2026, the group said its demand was based on the principles of fairness, inclusion and equity in the state’s political arrangement . The coalition noted that since 1999, Kwara State has been governed by Muslim governors, and the time had come for a balance that would accommodate all sections of the state .

The group recalled that Christians have consistently supported Muslim governorship candidates over the years, citing the elections of the late Mohammed Alabi Lawal, Bukola Saraki, Abdulfatah Ahmed and the incumbent Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq . It argued that the APC has Christian politicians within its ranks with the experience and capacity to govern the state, mentioning Engr. Femi Sanni and Dr Toyin Alabi as possible candidates .

The group also cited findings from the Africa Polling Institute, which it said showed a willingness among Kwarans to support candidates based on competence rather than religious identity . It added that Christians in the state were prepared to partner with their Muslim counterparts to ensure the emergence of a Christian governor under the APC .

The coalition said the inclusion of a Christian candidate would promote a sense of belonging among different segments of the state and strengthen unity . It stressed that its demand was not a call for religious politics but a request for a balance that would accommodate all sections of the state while prioritising competence and capacity .

The group, however, commended Tinubu’s administration for what it described as progress in addressing insecurity, improving the economy and promoting religious harmony across the country .
