The Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, on all seven counts brought against him by the Federal Government.
The judgment, delivered on Thursday, followed the court’s review of the prosecution’s evidence, which included video and audio broadcasts as well as testimonies from security agencies. The court held that the prosecution successfully proved all allegations bordering on terrorism, incitement, and threats to national security.
Kanu, who has been in custody during the trial, was present in court as Justice James Omotosho read the verdict. The defence had earlier argued that some of the charges were defective and that Kanu’s actions fell under the right to self-determination, but the court dismissed the claims, ruling that such arguments must align with constitutional provisions.
Sentencing is expected to take place after the court concludes all post-judgment procedures and hears final submissions from both parties. Security around the court premises was tightened as supporters and observers awaited the outcome.
