Former U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to sue the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) for $1 billion, alleging that the organisation manipulated footage of his January 6, 2021, speech in a Panorama documentary.
The BBC confirmed that it has received a legal notice from Trump’s lawyer, Alejandro Brito, who claims the broadcast “maliciously altered” Trump’s remarks to suggest that he encouraged violence at the U.S. Capitol.
The dispute comes amid internal turmoil at the BBC. Director-General Tim Davie and BBC News chief Deborah Turness resigned earlier this week following revelations that the broadcast had been edited in a way that “materially misrepresented” the original speech.
A leaked 19-page internal report indicated that producers combined separate excerpts of Trump’s statements to give the impression that he endorsed the storming of the Capitol. The report also noted “serious editorial judgment failures” in the production process.
In a statement, Trump described the broadcast as “false, defamatory, and politically motivated,” insisting that he called for peaceful protest. The BBC has launched an internal review and says it will issue further comment after its investigation is concluded.
