Trump Threatens $1 Billion Lawsuit Against BBC Over Edited Speech Controversy

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to sue the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) for $1 billion, alleging that the organisation manipulated footage of his January 6, 2021, speech in a Panorama documentary.

The BBC confirmed that it has received a legal notice from Trump’s lawyer, Alejandro Brito, who claims the broadcast β€œmaliciously altered” Trump’s remarks to suggest that he encouraged violence at the U.S. Capitol.

The dispute comes amid internal turmoil at the BBC. Director-General Tim Davie and BBC News chief Deborah Turness resigned earlier this week following revelations that the broadcast had been edited in a way that β€œmaterially misrepresented” the original speech.

A leaked 19-page internal report indicated that producers combined separate excerpts of Trump’s statements to give the impression that he endorsed the storming of the Capitol. The report also noted β€œserious editorial judgment failures” in the production process.

In a statement, Trump described the broadcast as β€œfalse, defamatory, and politically motivated,” insisting that he called for peaceful protest. The BBC has launched an internal review and says it will issue further comment after its investigation is concluded.
