Armed policemen on Thursday arrested activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, at the Federal High Court in Abuja shortly after he appeared in solidarity with the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Sowore, who has consistently called for Kanu’s release, was reportedly accosted by security operatives who insisted he must accompany them to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command.

When he demanded to know the reason for his arrest, one of the officers allegedly informed him that they were acting on the directive of the Commissioner of Police.

Sowore was said to have questioned the absence of a formal invitation letter and requested that his lawyer accompany him before he was eventually taken away in a police van.

Human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, confirmed the incident in a post on X, describing the arrest as β€œpreposterous” and accusing the police of undermining the judiciary.

As of press time, the FCT Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the arrest.
