UNILAG Builds Africa’s First University Auto Assembly Plant

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by establishing Africa’s first university-based automobile assembly plant.
The project, developed in partnership with Nord Automobiles, positions UNILAG at the forefront of automotive innovation and technical education in Nigeria.

Commissioned on November 10, 2022, the UNILAG–Nord Auto Assembly Plant has been quietly assembling vehicles and drones, while serving as a training and research hub for students. The facility includes an assembly line, research and development center, showroom, and after-sales workshop.

According to the university, the initiative is part of its commitment to practical education, industrial growth, and local content development. Students and researchers are directly involved in production and design, gaining hands-on experience in automotive engineering and manufacturing.

Observers have praised the project as a model of innovation-driven education, emphasizing its potential to strengthen Nigeria’s automobile industry and boost youth skill development.

Unlike many publicized government-backed ventures, UNILAG’s assembly plant has progressed with minimal publicity, focusing on tangible results and sustainable growth.

With this initiative, UNILAG joins the ranks of global institutions advancing homegrown technology and positioning Africa on the map of modern automotive engineering.
