The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, participated in the National Public Hearing on Constitution Alteration Bills held in Abuja on Monday.

The hearing, convened by the National Assembly, brought together traditional rulers, lawmakers, and other stakeholders to deliberate on proposed amendments to Nigeriaโ€™s 1999 Constitution.

Oba Owoade I, who ascended the throne in April 2025, succeeded the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III. His presence at the hearing underscores the increasing involvement of traditional institutions in the nationโ€™s governance and constitutional processes.

At the hearing, the Alaafin of Oyo submitted proposals aimed at enhancing the role of traditional rulers in governance and addressing issues pertinent to the Yoruba people. His contributions were part of broader discussions on constitutional reforms, including the establishment of reserved seats for women in the National Assembly and state legislatures.

The National Public Hearing serves as a platform for public participation in the ongoing constitutional review process, allowing citizens and stakeholders to present their views on proposed amendments. The outcomes of these hearings will inform the National Assemblyโ€™s decisions on potential changes to the Constitution.
