Lagos Speaker Obasa Bows Out of Assembly, Fuels 2027 Governorship Speculation

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has ignited a political storm after declaring that he will not seek a fifth term in the Assembly, fueling intense speculation that he may be eyeing the 2027 governorship race.

Obasa, who has held the gavel since 2015, made the revelation during a recent interview where he insisted that ambition is natural in politics, but that his next move would depend on his party’s decision.

“I am not going for a fifth term in the House. For what comes next, the party will decide,” he said, a remark many observers interpret as a thinly veiled signal of his interest in the governorship.

Political analysts say Obasa’s statement is more than a casual comment. With his deep grassroots influence in Agege and strong ties across Lagos politics, the Speaker is now firmly in the spotlight as one of the potential successors to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu when his tenure ends.

Already, the Speaker’s declaration has triggered heated debates in Lagos political circles. Some insiders argue that his growing profile and years of legislative dominance have strategically positioned him for a bigger role. Others, however, caution that his ambitions could ruffle feathers within the ruling party, which has traditionally managed succession battles with strict internal calculations.
