The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has clarified that the case involving Comfort Emmanson, the passenger accused of assaulting crew members on an Ibom Air flight, is different from the earlier incident involving Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as KWAM 1.
NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mike Achimugu, made the clarification during an X Space session on Monday. He explained that the regulatory body did not instruct Ibom Air to prosecute or ban Emmanson from flying, noting that the airline acted independently based on preliminary evidence.
“In this case, the airline exercised its rights to do what they needed to do,” Achimugu said. “The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), based on some of the evidence already available — because while the investigations are ongoing, you can still be working with what is available to you — made their own call.”
According to the NCAA, investigations into the Emmanson case are still ongoing, with crew reports, passenger statements, and other relevant evidence under review. Achimugu stressed that each incident is assessed on its own merits and that comparisons with the KWAM 1 matter are misplaced because the facts and circumstances are different.
The Ibom Air incident has reignited discussions in the aviation sector on how best to handle unruly passenger behaviour, with calls for clearer national guidelines that balance passenger rights and airline safety protocols.
