In a bold move to curb the menace of unapproved developments, the Lagos State Government has published a list of 176 illegal estates operating across the state and has issued a 21-day ultimatum to their developers and occupants to regularize or face sanctions.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, made this known during a press briefing held on Monday. He stated that the listed estates were found to be in violation of planning regulations, having commenced construction or sales without obtaining necessary approvals from relevant government authorities.
According to the Commissioner, many of these illegal estates are located in Ibeju-Lekki, Epe, Ikorodu, and other rapidly developing areas. He warned unsuspecting members of the public against purchasing property from such unapproved schemes, noting that doing so could lead to financial losses.
“The 21-day notice is a final warning to developers and landowners involved in these illegal estates to come forward and regularize their documents with the Ministry,” Dr. Olumide said. “Failure to comply will result in sealing, demolition, and possible legal action.”
The government also appealed to residents and prospective property buyers to verify the status of any estate with the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA) or the Office of Physical Planning before making purchases.
This crackdown comes as part of the state’s renewed efforts to enforce orderly development, enhance infrastructure planning, and protect residents from falling prey to fraudulent developers.
