President Bola Tinubu has arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend the 17th BRICS Summit, a gathering of leaders from the world’s fastest-growing economies.

Tinubu’s arrival marks a significant diplomatic engagement, with the summit expected to focus on strengthening trade and technology exchange within the bloc.

According to Presidential Spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu is attending the summit at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, leveraging Nigeria’s status as a “partner country” within the BRICS framework.

This status, Onanuga explained, is an upgrade from Nigeria’s previous guest status, allowing for more meaningful participation in the summit.

As one of four African leaders attending the summit, Tinubu joins counterparts from Egypt, Ethiopia, and South Africa, with the latter being a full member of the BRICS bloc.

The summit provides a platform for Nigeria to showcase investment opportunities in key sectors such as energy, solid minerals, and agriculture.

The BRICS Summit, running from July 6 to 7, 2025, promises to be a crucial event in global economic diplomacy, with leaders converging to discuss critical issues and strengthen partnerships among emerging economies.
