The Nigeria Police Force has advised the Osun State government to suspend the local government elections scheduled for today, February 22, due to heightened security threats and legal complexities.

According to Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, “Various groups, including political elements and other interested parties, are mobilising to instigate unrest and disrupt public peace.”

Adejobi stated that the police had received credible intelligence indicating a likelihood of violence and significant security threats if the elections proceed.

He advised the Osun State Government to reconsider and suspend the planned elections immediately, citing the combination of heightened security threats and existing legal complexities.

The Police also reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and upholding Nigeria’s democratic processes in accordance with the law.

β€œThe NPF reiterates its unwavering commitment to maintaining peace, protecting lives and property, and ensuring that Nigeria’s democratic processes are upheld in accordance with the law,” Adejobi stated.

The Osun State High Court had ordered the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) to conduct elections for vacant local government positions.

However, the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, had asked Governor Ademola Adeleke to put the local government election on hold, citing a Court of Appeal judgement that nullified the judgement of the Federal High Court, Osogbo.

Clashes between the APC and PDP members over the control of local government councils have resulted in the death of at least six persons between Monday and Friday.

However, It is unlikely that the election will be postponed.
